DHS launches council

WASHINGTON--The Department of Homeland Security's Office of Infrastructure Protection recently chartered the State, Local, Tribal, and Territorial Government Coordinating Council (or SLTTGCC, which is certainly a catchy acronym). The body is being billed as a key component of DHS's unified approach to protecting the nation's critical infrastructure and key resources outlined in the National Infrastructure Protection Plan, according to Robert Stephan, DHS assistant secretary for infrastructure protection. The idea, he said, is to bring all the relevant public and private partners to a single conversation, and the council will be chaired by Colonel (Ret.) Michael McDaniel, homeland security advisor for the state of Michigan. The group will work to implement the NIPP after participating in the Critical Infrastructure Partnership Advisory Council Plenary Session on July 19, 2007. Most important, according to officials, is to make sure leaders of smaller governments, like those of tribes, states, cities and towns, are fully integrated in protection efforts.
