In addition to the sessions highlighted below,which by no means comprise an exhaustive list, there ar e a number of opportunities for NSS attendees to learn about government-related work, including homeland security initiatives. Wednesday, Oct. 1 Panel: Implementing New Technologies and Public-Private Methods 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. This panel discussion will explore how the adoption of new security systems and best practices involving police, private security, businesses, acedemia and government can improve safety, law enforcement and commerce. Wireless Solutions for Access Control Applications, presented by Fred Conforti, founder, president and chief executive officer of Recognition Source 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. Discussion at this presentation will cover the technology, performance characteristics and limitations of using wireless communications in access control applications. Conforti will also address the two biggest questions integrators have: How reliable are wireless communications and how secure and implementable is the system? Understanding the Advancing World of Digital Video Recording, presented by Robert A. Wimmer, president of Video Security Consultants 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. In this session, attendees get an overview of the latest theories of digital recording and today’s video storage media. Wimmer will provide information for proper equipment selection and operation of DVRs, including special features, interfacing equipment and design and installation concerns. Integration: Facts and Fiction 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. James Gompers, president and chief executive officer of Gom-pers Inc., will facilitate this roundtable that will delve into topics such as the role of IP and middleware in today’s security environment, current trends and conceptual designs in integration, and leveraging integration to increase return on investment. Unfortunately, due to the interactive nature of this session, attendance is limited to 30 participants. Thursday, Oct. 2 Getting the Most Out of Today’s Biometric Technology, presented by Andrew Podolak, vice president of Global Technologies 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. This session will provide an overview of biometric technology as it has evolved, with an emphasis on advances in the last two years, when many practical advances have been made. Real-life examples will be presented to demonstrate what works well and how to avoid the pitfalls of emerging biometric technologies. Building Automation: Moving Toward All-In-One Security and Facility Controls System, presented by Scott Cleary, manager of physical security for Scana Corp. 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. This session will focus on Scana’s recent integration of its company-wide security systems, fire safety systems and HVAC systems. Among the issues Cleary will address are access control changeover and CCTV integration. The Makings of Smarter and More Secure AC Systems, presented by Kelly Stark, Texas Instruments Radio Frequency Identification Systems 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. Using a case study approach, this session will look at how to make access control systems secure across multiple facilities and autonomous systems. Stark will detail technology and business issues in evaluating and upgrading to a more secure access control system.
