Jury finds fire firm liable for fire

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. -A jury recently found Grinnell Fire Protection and records storage company Diversified Records negligent in a 1997 fire that destroyed the storage company’s facility. Now, the jury is hearing testimony from 15 plaintiffs in the case seeking financial restitution. That part of the case could last several months. Already, the jury has awarded $20.5 million to First Union National Bank for damages. The company lost 152,000 boxes of important information in the fire. In its October verdict, the jury said Diversified was 60 percent negligent and Grinnell 40 percent negligent. Grinnell was the company hired to install a fire sprinkler system in Diversified Records’ new storage facility. SecurityLink from Ameritech and other contractors associated with construction of the new storage facility were not found liable by the jury.
