Midwest city investigating licensure

WEST DES MOINES, Iowa-City officials here are considering instituting a licensure requirement for alarm companies that's included in a fire code before the City Council. The consideration comes amid a growing number of false alarms, about 60 every month, or 43 percent of all fire calls, according to city fire officials. That's compared to a national average of about 10 percent, according to the National Fire Protection Association. The city already has a fee schedule for repeated false alarms that fines the alarm user, as do the surrounding cities of Urbandale and Des Moines. Iowa City is also considering a similar ordinance.
