Monitoring company may have aided burglar

BLUFFTON, S.C. - Authorities here are investigating a crime in which a burglar received unwitting assistance from a monitoring company in deactivating an alarm before stealing cash from a home. According to Deputy Debbie Szpanka, public information officer for the Beufort County Sheriff’s Office, a homeowner returned to his house one night in July to find that his alarm system had been disabled and $300 had been taken from a hiding place in the house. Upon contacting his alarm company, who Szpanka declined to identify, the homeowner learned that a woman had set off the alarm when she entered the home earlier in the day. The intruder then called the alarm company to report that she had accidentally set off the alarm and convinced an employee to talk her through deactivating the system. Szpanka declined further comment on the case, saying it was part of an ongoing investigation.
