LifeShield customers to be ‘monitored by Protection 1’

Yardley, Pa.-based LifeShield Security offers wireless digital home security systems that are easy to install and are professionally monitored. And now monitoring and installation for LifeShield customers is going to be provided by Protection 1, the second largest security company in the United States.

LifeShield today announced a new partnership with that industry leader. Here’s more from the company’s June 6 release:

NAPERVILLE, Ill.—Tony Byerly, president of Stanley CSS North America and United Kingdom, is leaving the company, according to an internal announcement this week, Security Systems News has learned. Byerly will be replaced by Martin Schnurr, who is currently president of Stanley Hydraulic Tools.

New partnership links alarm industry, police, insurers

What may have seemed like a pipe dream to many a few years ago—getting the alarm industry, the law enforcement community and the insurance industry on the same page—is now reality with the Partnership for Priority Video Alarm Response.

The new public/private partnership brings together all of the stakeholders in property crime to reduce losses and increase arrests through the use of video intrusion alarms. Among the participants are the National Sheriffs Association and the National Insurance Crime Bureau, with Don Young of Protection 1 and Steve Walker of Stanley Convergent Security Solutions representing the alarm industry on the PPVAR board.

"We are beginning to have credible data with encouraging results of arrest rates hundreds of times what is found with traditional alarms," said Keith Jentoft, coordinator for the partnership and president of RSI Video Technologies. "We have been working with many alarm companies, law enforcement and PSAPs, as well as insurers who ultimately pay the bill for property crime. This partnership will help gather real-world examples of what is working best for all the stakeholders."

Jentoft said large third-party monitoring companies have also gotten on board, including CMS, UCC and Rapid Response. On the law enforcement side, the Los Angeles Sheriffs Department—the second-largest police organization in the country—has joined and has designated a representative.

"If you ask people, nobody has ever heard of an organization that has brought together all of the stakeholders, so we're pretty excited about it," Jentoft said.

STAMFORD, Conn.—Frontier Communications about four years ago tried a go-it-alone experiment offering home security in a small town in Pennsylvania. The telecom, based here, did everything from marketing the product to monitoring it through a third-party monitoring center.
Now Frontier is taking a different approach in a second foray into the security market: It’s partnering with two security giants, ADT and Protection 1, to offer security products in two separate six-month trial programs, one in upstate New York and one in Pennsylvania.

NYMP still up for sale and Pro 1 proactive

Here are a couple items of interest:

One is a short update on something I wrote about earlier this month: The proposed sale of the New York Merchants Protective Co. The sale is still awaiting a federal judge’s decision.

The financially embattled New York-based alarm company—owned by the same family for about 100 years—has been in the news because Bank of America in January sued NYMP and owner Wayne Wahrsager for more than $19.2 million for allegedly defaulting on a loan.

Then, in August, a court-appointed receiver overseeing the company posted newspaper ads putting it up for sale. The notice said the company would be sold to Professional Security Technologies LLC unless the receiver got a better offer.

A judge was slated to hold a hearing on Sept. 16 on whether a sale should go forward. Then the hearing got moved to Sept. 20 and then to Sept. 26.

I’ve been checking court records and there’s been no decision yet. I checked in with Wahrsager, who is no longer a part of the company, but has characterized the pending transaction as a “fire sale.” He claims the receiver, who fired him this summer, is mismanaging NYMP.

Wahrsager told me in an email: “I would simply say that the court adjourned the matter and has not approved the buyer.  The court is evaluating the statute to determine whether the receiver complied with what he was supposed to.”

Another item that just came across my desk almost made me think it was still summer, instead of fall.

Protection 1, the Romeoville, Ill.-based home security giant, put out a release saying it has received reports that door-to-door salespeople in the Boston area are falsely claiming they work for Pro 1. “These individuals are persistent and have been reported to harass customers until they agree to sign a new contract for a fraudulent system upgrade,” Pro 1 said. Sounds like the kind of complaints made quite frequently during the warmer months when the summer sales model companies are active.

Pro 1 is being proactive about the issue, sending out a release with tips for customers to protect themselves and urging them to call Pro 1 to verify a salesperson’s employment status.
