Security companies grow fast, again in 2012

NEW YORK—The 2013 Inc. 5,000 list has been released and, again this year many security companies made the list, which ranks businesses based on self-reported growth data.

In 2013, there was a restructuring at the top of DEFENDER Direct, with CEO and president Marcia Barnes exiting and company founder David Lindsey stepping in to take her place. Now, the company announced today, it has a new president, and it’s a promotion from within.

Lindsey is passing the mantle of president to Jim Boyce, the company’s chief operating officer for almost three years. Boyce will also retain his COO title. His leadership has helped the Indianapolis-based company to grow dramatically, according to a June 16 news release.

DEFENDER bills itself as ADT’s only authorized Premier Provider. In business since 1998, the company employs more than 2,000 individuals in 48 states with over 143 branch offices nationwide.

Boyce actually joined DEFENDER’s Board of Advisors in 2009 and became the company’s COO in October 2011. Prior to joining DEFENDER, Boyce served on the executive teams at two large, global businesses, Convergys and Procter & Gamble, the news release said.

As president, Boyce will lead all day-to-day company operations, including overseeing DEFENDER’s Business Improvement Team, which includes key leaders from around the business who collaborate to achieve organizational alignment and continued success, the release said.

“In his time at DEFENDER, Jim has done an amazing job leading our security business. Key components of our business have dramatically grown and improved under Jim’s leadership,” Lindsey said, in a prepared statement.

In his own statement, Boyce said, “I am pleased with the success we are having and am incredibly optimistic about the future for this healthy, growing and inspired company. We have lightning in a bottle!”

Boyce is active in charitable work, according to the news release. He currently serves on the United Way of Central Indiana Board of Advisors and supports the Make-A-Wish Foundation. He is also involved with organizations such as the YWAM Homes of Hope Program, Junior Achievement and Habitat for Humanity.

Just last year, I wrote about leadership changes at DEFENDER Direct, the country’s leading ADT dealer, when longtime employee Marcia Barnes took over as CEO and president, replacing company founder David Lindsey, who was stepping down to do philanthropic work.

Now, about 15 months later, Barnes is out and Lindsey is back in his old job, according to a recent news release from the Indianapolis-based company.

Here’s some of what the company had to say:
 

Lindsey replaces Marcia Barnes, who has left the company to pursue other business interests. …  “The board and I are grateful for Marcia’s 13 years of leadership in the company, which helped us achieve our strong growth,” said Lindsey.  “Our company is at an exciting point in its journey and I look forward to continuing that momentum.”

The release also said that, “the company has named Brad Cumings as chief marketing officer and has promoted Scott DeNardin to the role of regional VP of its HVAC business division.”

Founded in 1998, DEFENDER bills itself as the nation’s leading ADT dealer. It has more than 2,400 employees in 50 states and more than 140 branch offices, according to the company. Its residential services include offerings from Williams Comfort Air, a heating, cooling and plumbing company.

Barnes had been with the company since its early years and worked closely with Lindsey, rising to the rank of president before she became CEO. I’ve got a call in to DEFENDER to learn more about what the latest leadership change will mean for the company. Stay posted!

 

Who in security topped the Inc. 5000 this year?

The Inc. 5000 has released its 2012 list, and again, there are a number of physical security companies included.

Top among the physical security companies that I saw on the Inc. 5000 list, which was officially released yesterday was VMS Alarms, a residential and small business security company and Monitronics dealer.

VMS Alarms ranks #526 on the 2012 List. It had a three-year growth rate of  731 percent; 2008 revenues of  $2.3 million, and 2011 revenues of  $19.5 million.

#943 Sting Alarm: 2008 revenues: $1 million; 2011 revenues: $4.5 million. Installs and maintains advanced video surveillance and burglar alarm systems for high-rise residential towers, casinos, retail chains, and other customers.

#1097 LogicMark: 2008 revenues: $2 million; 2011 revenues: $7.7 million. Manufactures a line of personal emergency response systems. Users, such as the elderly or those with serious medical issues, wear a pendant with a speakerphone, and can push a button to call for help.

#1123 Nationwide Security Solutions: 2008 revenues: $1.6 million; 2011 revenues: $6 million. Sells and installs residential and commercial security and automation systems. Serves as the primary distributor for represent Monitronics International, a producer of security and monitoring technology for burglar, fire and medical emergency systems. #1255 Integrity Alarms: 2008 revenues: $1.6 million; 2011 revenues: $6 million. An ADT authorized dealer that sells, installs, and maintains home security systems in California, Nevada, New Jersey and Delaware.

David Lindsey, the founder of Indianapolis-based Defender Direct, the nation’s No. 1 ADT dealer, recently stepped down from his position as CEO to focus on philanthropic mission work and encourage other companies to do the same. He said that will not only help companies do good—but it will do good for their business by increasing things like company dynamics and productivity.

Lindsey is one of the founders of Companies With A Mission, which its web site describes as “a movement dedicated to helping business leaders create opportunities for employees and their families to reap the rewards of service.”

At Defender, which he founded in 1998, Lindsey has had a more informal focus on mission work. Over the past five years, he said, Defender has sent several thousand people down to Mexico to help build 125 homes for the needy there.

Now Lindsey is formally devoting himself to philanthropy as Defender’s chief missions officer. “I look at much of what I’m doing as still an extension of the Defender story,” he told me. “We’ve always been a giving and a missional company and I’m trying to just continue to focus on that piece right now.”

He called Companies With A Mission a “ministry” and said, “We’re taking a lot of things that have been a blessing and powerful for our company and sharing them with other companies …right now our main focus is on U.S. companies [and some Canadian as well], but we do see it as a worldwide effort.”

One plan, he said, is to take as many as 100 business leaders and their families on mission trips to Mexico or the Dominican Republic by the end of the year, “so they can have a mission experience.”

A second objective, he said, is a “service challenge” the ministry is extending to companies. One challenge is in Indianapolis and another will be in New Orleans this fall, he said.

Companies are challenged to put teams together to go out and do community service work at nonprofits, then submit short videos of their work and answer three questions on the ministry’s web site to win prize money for their favorite charities.

In Indianapolis, Lindsey said he expects as many as 100 teams to compete for $100,000 in prize money.

Obviously the charities benefit, but how does that help the businesses?

Lindsey said he knows philanthropy helps companies because Defender tested the service challenge among its own employees before taking it citywide.

“It was a huge success,” he told me. “We worried that during the time we had everyone out doing projects, we’d have our sales go down but actually we’ve had six record months since we started the contest, the two months that we were in the contest, and then the four after.”

He added: “What we attribute that to is we just changed the water cooler conversion at our office. Everybody was buzzing and talking about their service project” [and what other teams were doing] … There’s nothing like the workplace going out and serving together—what that does for the work dynamic is really almost unbelievable.”

He said about half Defender’s teams are continuing to do community service on a regular basis. “It just brings a life and a spirit into our company that’s making a difference, and we want to share that with more companies and help them see that increased productivity, as well as the retention, recruiting and loyalty … that has been enhanced by this,” Lindsey said.
