Dormitory sprinkler bills introduced

WASHINGTON-Two bills are making their way through Congressional ranks on Capital Hill that would provide for fire sprinkler systems or other fire prevention technologies in public and private college and university housing.

About $100 million is authorized to be appropriated for each fiscal year between 2002 and 2006 for assistance in dormitory and fraternal house retrofits.

LAS VEGAS-The National Burglar & Fire Alarm Association is opposing the Las Vegas Fire & Rescue Department's recent decision not to respond to fire or emergency calls without verification.

The new policy, which went into effect in February, means that fire and rescue crews will not respond to automatic alarms, such as panic pendants, or fires reported by a monitoring company unless a person on site has verified that a fire is in progress or there is an emergency.

Northeastern University avoids fire

BOSTON-A fire system installed by Northeast Fire Systems helped to avoid a disaster when a student at Northeastern University left a kettle unattended and caused a fire.

According to Peter Rizzi, Northeastern University's Fire Safety Officer, the fire was contained and extinguished before the fire department arrived on the scene.
