It’s inevitable—the 2G sunset is coming, but at least 3G and 4G technologies are already here. But what exactly is the 2G sunset, and when will it happen? While most mobile network operators (MNOs) expect to stop supporting 2G services by 2017, every timeline is fluid and no two MNO sunset procedures are the same. This leaves the security industry and others still relying on the 2G network scattering to figure out what happens when these services end and what, if any, changes must occur for the migration to 3G, 4G or both. This shift will inherently require upfront costs to those seeking to improve their systems, with little room for businesses to turn a profit. Once this fact is accepted, the main question becomes how can an enterprise embrace the advancement of technology smartly? Fortunately, the upgrade to 3G/4G comes with its advantages, including flexibility, faster speeds and better bandwidth.
More than 20 years after the introduction of the 2G network, we face another technology revolution. The end of 2G is here. The only question is: Are you ready?
