Bread and circus

Bread and circus

Not to distract the masses from any other topics that may be occupying their thoughts, but in the blog this week I really am going to talk about bread.

There’s a new ransomware group making the rounds lately and if you’re wondering what they’ve done to be singled out among a sea of cyber ne’er-do-wells then I’d have to say, it’s probably their preferred form of payment. A group calling itself Hellcat has claimed to have compromised Schneider Electric, a French multinational group and made demands of $125,000 in crypto currency.

Also, Baguettes.

That’s a lot of bread, literally and figuratively, for 40 gigs of stolen data. As cybersecurity expert Hüseyin Can Yuceel calls it, this is just a marketing ploy, possibly to help establish future RaaS operations. Yes, you read that right, Ransomware as a Service. These subscriptions are really getting out of hand.

The U.S. government is currently looking to do something about that pain point as well having been frustrated with the system of capitulation fueling even more brazen attacks on businesses and infrastructure that has brought us to bread gate. Maybe breadbasket? We’ll workshop it.

The Biden administration is currently looking into backing a controversial treaty in defiance of digital rights advocates in order to make any sort of progress in the fight against ransomware groups. Assuming that doesn’t pan out, it would be prudent to be on the lookout for any other burgeoning cybercrime groups on the rise.

The joke is bread.
