DES PLAINES, Ill. - The fire department of the city of Des Plaines proposed a law that would require new residential buildings with more than 1,000 square feet to have automatic fire sprinklers.
Chief Fire Inspector Don Schuman said the law would apply to new, single family residential buildings with more than 1,000 square feet. The sprinkler proposal excludes detached buildings under 1,000 square feet, such as garages and sheds that are not used as residences.
Schuman expects the measure to pass when the city council meets on October 4. The proposed law was first introduced at the city council meeting in early September.
