Five Questions with Kara Pelecky

INDIANAPOLIS—STANLEY Security’s Chief Information Officer, Kara Pelecky, shares her love of horses, the advice her dad imparted to her, her favorite movie and more with SSN. Get to know more about her!

ARE YOU MARRIED? ANY KIDS? ANY PETS?
Yes, I’m married with four children in high school and college. I am an avid equestrian with big dreams and moderate skills, and am looking forward to growing my riding skills and possibly buying a horse.

WHAT’S SOMETHING INTERESTING ABOUT YOU THAT YOUR COWORKERS MAY NOT KNOW?
Most don’t know that I am repatriating to the United States from a seven-year role in the United Arab Emirates. I led the establishment of the IT function for the first-ever nuclear power generation station in the Arabian Gulf. Repatriating during a pandemic has made my life feel like a game of “52-card Pickup.”

WHAT’S THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE YOU’VE EVERY BEEN GIVEN?
Certainly, the best advice I received was throughout my childhood from my father that “you have to let yourself be happy.”

WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO JOIN THE SECURITY INDUSTRY?
Coming from nuclear power, I already had significant exposure to security in its many forms. I enjoyed the multifaceted nature of nuclear power with different problems to solve each day. (Could we use drones to predict jellyfish blooms?)

I was interested to experience an industry that was similarly complex but that had a truer customer than seen in the energy industry, and found that in the security industry.

WHAT BOOK, PODCAST OR MOVIE WOULD YOUR RECOMMEND TO OTHERS AND WHY?
Most will laugh or roll their eyes, but my favorite movie is “Groundhog Day.” This is especially ironic during this period of pandemic, given that each day seems to repeat in real life. The cycle of sarcasm, despair, joy and redemption in this movie is uplifting. This movie makes me laugh again and again.
