Five Questions: Scott Brothers, Oncam

Scott Brothers, COO, Oncam, believes all great companies are built on a foundation of diverse individuals coming together to share and execute against a vision. In fact, his LinkedIn profile highlights a quote by James C. Collins: “Great vision without great people is irrelevant.” Security Systems News caught up with Scott for a brief chat.

Are you married? Any kids?
Yes, I'm married to my hero, my wife Lucy, and we have two children, Izzy and Finlay. During the week, I work in London, so the weekends are precious and reserved only for quality with them.

What are some of your hobbies?
Aside from family time and activities, I am equally happy reading the latest Jack Reacher, understanding how Apple reached the levels they did as a business or watching my beloved Manchester United trying to get back to our heady days of success under Sir Alex Ferguson.

Is there something interesting that your coworkers might not know about you?
It might not be much of a secret anymore, but so many of my challenges in my career have been decided with my gut rather than my head. This scares me senseless until I build internal relationships at which point I feel the group can achieve something special together.

How did you first get started in the industry?
In 1996, I was training to become an electrical engineer when I spotted an ad for an apprentice engineer. I applied and was successful in being chosen to join the Sensormatic apprenticeship scheme in the United Kingdom and Ireland.

What trends are you seeing right now in the industry?
Cybersecurity is at the top of everyone's concerns; but, it wasn't until organizations started to feel the effects that the industry started paying attention to the processes by which solutions were built and protected. We're also seeing a fair amount of shift toward integration between products from various companies in an effort to deliver more value, as well as the rise of artificial intelligence within security.
