Increased security at the movies

DEDHAM, Mass.—In response to recent acts of violence at movie theaters, Northeast chain Showcase Cinemas started prohibiting moviegoers from bringing backpacks into the theater.

"To ensure the safety of our guests and employees, for the time being, we are prohibiting any and all backpacks and packages as well as reserving the right to inspect the contents of any purse or bag prior to admission," Showcase Cinemas said on its website.

Research firm C4 released a study, saying that many moviegoers would like more security measures at theaters. Nineteen percent of those surveyed would pay as much as $3 more per ticket to cover security costs.

C4 surveyed 250 moviegoers on July 28 and 29.
