BOCA RATON, Fla. — Home security company ADT reported that its network had been illegally accessed in a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission early this week.
An ADT spokesperson told Security Systems News (SSN): “We are investigating a cyberattack on our network. For more information, we direct you to our Form 8-K disclosure filed with the SEC on Oct. 7.”
In that filing, the company clarified that the data breach occurred as a result of compromised credentials obtained through one of its third-party business partners. Following that discovery, ADT told the SEC that it swiftly shut down access and notified the third-party of the incident as it began to implement its countermeasures.
“ADT has hired leading third-party cybersecurity experts to assist with the company’s response to the incident, and is working closely with federal law enforcement,” ADT stated in the filing. “The company is also cooperating closely with its third-party business partner to address the incident.”
As for what might have been compromised in the breach, ADT told the SEC that it believed the data is related to employee user accounts and does not currently believe any customer personal information or their security systems have been compromised.
The incident follows closely after a similar breach reported by ADT on Aug. 7, 2024. In that incident, hackers accessed the company’s databases containing customer order information, reportedly exposing as many as 30,000 records that were stolen and offered for sale on the internet.
