Atlanta suburb begins fines for false alarms

SANDY SPRINGS, Ga.—This suburb north of Atlanta is about to join the growing group of Georgia cities fining alarm system owners for excessive false alarms that result in police or fire dispatch, according to 11 Alive, an Atlanta-based NBC affiliate.
Sandy Springs' new false alarm ordinance will take effect in the first few months of 2013. The ordinance will require system owners to register with the city.
Sandy Springs police are hopeful that the ordinance will drastically reduce the number of false alarm calls, as it has in other Georgia cities that have implemented similar ordinances. They are also hopeful that fewer false alarms will keep police more attuned to actual emergencies, and that fewer taxpayer dollars will be wasted on false alarm dispatches.
