Robert Batista oversees the day-to-day security operations for Kane Realty, which has more than 150 acres of mixed-use development and $1 billion in construction in the North Hills area of Raleigh, N.C.
He is responsible for 25 public safety officers, access control and fire safety. In addition to working closely with local law enforcement agencies, he also conducts risk assessments and disaster preparedness tests and serves as a mentor for developing security solutions.
He always was attracted to the security industry, he said.
“In my sophomore year of college I changed my major to justice systems and started working [security] in a hotel in San Juan, Puerto Rico,” forgoing his previous desire to get a law degree, he said.
Batista was born in the Dominican Republic, grew up in Puerto Rico, moved to Florida and then to North Carolina.
State-of-the-art video surveillance would help him in his current mixed-use environment, he said.
Proactive intelligence, “to be able to analyze behaviors and be prepared,” would be of utmost value, he said.
At Kane, “we have a very good physical security program, a good access control program. I'd like to have better infrastructure and the staff to manage it,” he said.
Five years from now, things will be better, Batista said. “Slowly but surely, it will be more feasible to justify ownership. We'll be in a much better place, with security becoming more affordable and becoming a rule of the land now.”
