LYNCHBURG, Va.—Honeywell International was hired by the Nelson County school system in February to implement safety measures and improve security at the four public schools, according to the News & Advance.
“We only have one chance to get it right,” Honeywell representative Ron Faw said at a Feb. 29 school board meeting, according to the report. “Chances are we're doing all this for something that will never happen. But we don't get a do-over.”
All four schools will soon have new remote entry systems and access control in place.
The remote entry systems, installed during the past few weeks at the main entrance of each school, are meant to control perimeter doors and increase situational awareness.
The access control system uses electronic locking devices and previously authorized credentials to restrict access to people and groups based on criteria defined in the security plan. Nelson County High School has six electronic access-controlled doors; Nelson County Middle School has three; Tye River Elementary School has five; and Rockfish River Elementary School has five remote entry stations and one master station.
The project cost about $113,000 and is being paid for by a $100,000 school security equipment grant that the school system received from the state last September, along with a $25,000 local match from the county.
