NewsPoll: Don’t look at weather, look at costs

YARMOUTH, Maine — Climate change isn’t really a consideration when it comes to the design of residential security systems, according to the respondents to a recent SSN News Poll, but the rising cost of technology certainly is.

An even 40-40 split of respondents believe climate change is not important or only somewhat important when it comes to the design of a residential security system, with the remaining 20% of respondents giving it more consideration.

“I really don't think any smart home technology can ‘mitigate’ climate change,” one respondent wrote.

Just over 55% of respondents believe sensors for sensing weather-related threats would most effectively enhance residential security systems. A smaller group of respondents, at just over 22%, believes the most effective technology is smart surveillance cameras.

However, as one respondent noted, “I expect security equipment to be durable enough to withstand extreme weather conditions. This should not be something that has to be considered independently.” But the respondent also said, “I do not have a need for weather-related security issues at my residence.”

Half of respondents believe that cost is holding back adoption rates for smart home technologies, climate change notwithstanding. Another 37.5% believe a lack of awareness of available solutions is to blame.

“If home security equipment and systems were lower priced, more people would absolutely purchase and use it,” wrote one reader.
