YARMOUTH, Maine—The changing landscape of security threats, driven by increasing risks to personnel, assets and property, has shifted the perception of security entrances from an optional feature to an “absolute imperative,” says Boon Edam’s Amanda Powell.
“Securing facility perimeters and sensitive interior areas has become more critical than ever, making security entrances a cornerstone of modern physical security strategies,” said Powell, marketing manager.
Combatting loss prevention
Powell explained that loss prevention remains a “significant motivator” for businesses to install security entrances, noting that these solutions help protect against shrinkage, theft and unauthorized access.
“From revolving doors to interlocking portals, companies are deploying security entrances to prevent internal and external threats,” she said. “High-end retailers, such as jewelry stores, benefit from these systems by securing valuable merchandise, while warehouses and distribution centers use them to combat insider theft.”
In addition, smash-and-grab robberies have become a growing problem for retailers. Security entrances not only slow down or prevent unauthorized access but can also provide crucial time for law enforcement to respond.
“Smash-resistant laminate films applied to security entrance glass can significantly delay entry, deter criminals, and protect both employees and assets,” Powell said.
Defending against cyber threats
Beyond physical security, Powell pointed out that security entrances also play a crucial role in defending against cyber threats.
“Unauthorized access to server rooms or data centers can lead to serious breaches, but entrances equipped with dual-factor authentication and facial recognition help prevent unauthorized individuals from entering sensitive areas, reducing the risk of data breaches,” she said.
Mitigating workplace violence
Workplace violence is a rising concern, with approximately two million Americans affected each year, according to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. Powell pointed out security entrances are critical to minimizing these risks.
While biometric access systems are standard, traditional doors remain “vulnerable” to tailgating and piggybacking, she said, allowing unauthorized individuals to gain entry. Security entrances prevent these breaches by only allowing one person at a time to enter, ensuring that access control is strictly enforced.
Managing traffic flow
Powell explained security entrances also improve pedestrian traffic management in busy environments. Whether it’s a corporate lobby or a high-traffic retail store, security entrances streamline entry and exit, preventing congestion and ensuring efficient operations. Even during attempted break-ins, these systems can remain functional, helping to keep traffic flowing and maintain order, she said.
Enhancing brand image
Additionally, Powell explained a well-designed corporate lobby with security entrances conveys professionalism and a commitment to safety. These entrances can be customized to reflect a company’s brand aesthetics, enhancing the visitor experience while ensuring protection against unauthorized access.
