ORLANDO, Fla.—Securitas Technology launched the Environmental Sustainability Initiative at the Global Security Exchange (GSX) 2024, a collaborative effort between the company and its clients and partners to ensure a more sustainable future.
The Sustainability Initiative is structured to align with the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), a corporate climate action organization that enables companies worldwide to play their part in combating the climate crisis.
Among the benefits that Securitas cited for choosing sustainable electronic security products: Making informed decisions knowing the emissions data for the technology; boosting productivity while potentially cutting costs; supporting sustainability targets through the power of security; and helping secure a sustainable future for the global environment and society.
“Sustainability is a journey for Securitas,” said Senior Vice President Ashwin Kataria. “It started a couple of years ago when Magnus (Ahlqvist, president and CEO at Securitas Group) said that we’re making a commitment to SBTi. When it comes to sustainability from a Securitas perspective, you've got the environmental piece and the social governance piece. As part of that SBTi commitment, we as a company agreed to basically reduce our carbon footprint by 42% by 2030.”
The initiative has its roots in CO2 emissions data that Securitas collected that showed 70% of greenhouse gas emissions in electronic security occur during product use by clients. Based on those results, the company then began working with its vendor partners to collect data based on power consumption of the electronic security products purchased.
As part of the Sustainability Initiative, Securitas will now provide CO2 emissions data in every commercial sales proposal to clients and prospective clients in the United States and Canada. The information will be calculated based on the annual energy consumption of security devices or systems, expressed in CO2 equivalent.
“I don't think there's a more important initiative,” stated Tony Byerly, global president and CEO, Securitas Technology. “We thought it was important to step out and lead in the space and actually do something different that can help move the whole space. We're the No. 2 provider commercially globally, and that means we have a lot of relationships with a lot of suppliers and the source of the manufacturing. I think this is a chance for us to really differentiate and take the leading position in the market to really help the market and the industry take this into consideration and actually start to make it a best practice. We can move the industry forward.”
Securitas will continue collaborating with many of the top global manufacturers and innovators in the security industry to support the sustainability journey of its clients by offering the most energy-efficient solutions and services for the long-term sustainability of buildings, businesses, cities and communities.
“It's very much an awareness, and down the road we hope we start having the discussion about other lower-emission alternatives that may be out there,” said Mike Beattie, global CIO and senior vice president of IT at Securitas Technology. “Working with our strategic vendors, building out the database with their data and being able to share this with our clients is really where this is going.”
