YARMOUTH, Maine — In light of surprising burglary statistics, Veronica Moturi of Brinks Home discusses the latest in residential security systems, including the evolution into home automation, the leverage of AI and more.
In the United States, as many as 3,062 burglaries occur every day, according to the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program; however, only 25% of Americans have a home security system, according to SafeWise.
We took some of our pressing questions to Moturi, senior vice president of customer experience.
SSN: What’s the most important question consumers aren’t asking when purchasing their home security system?
Moturi: How can I leverage my alarm setup to save money? Consumers lack the knowledge of how the traditional security system has evolved into home automation. Ten years ago, security was looked at as home intrusion only but has transitioned into home automation, including cameras, flood sensors, energy and even solar.
SSN: Can you talk about what you see as the most exciting development in the residential security industry and how that will change things in the future?
Moturi: The leverage of AI – this includes video analytics, video verification and situational awareness. For example, video analytics allows us to detect people or cars vs. recording a never-ending clip of a tree in the wind. This has allowed for a personalization of our base to expand through feature capabilities.
SSN: In our most recent News Poll we asked our readers about addressing the challenges to home security and smart home features in the face of climate change (rising temperatures, property damage, etc.). What is Brinks Home doing to address these challenges?
Moturi: Through our company partnerships, we provide a “giveback-get back” plan when consumers are displaying energy-efficient trends. By participating in these programs, homeowners allow their utility providers to make slight adjustments to their thermostats, helping utilities reduce stress on the power grid during the hottest summer or coldest winter days.
Additionally, Brinks Home provides programs like ‘theft protection’ that help cover customer’s deductible when an intrusion event occurs.
