Allied Universal nails assessment amid push to secure ports

IRVINE, Calif. — Allied Universal’s client, the Helen Delich Bently Port of Baltimore, has received a top U.S. Coast Guard security assessment for the 15th consecutive year, a noteworthy accomplishment as the nation begins a push to better secure its ports.

In late February, the White House issued an executive order (E.O.) designed to strengthen its maritime cybersecurity, supply chains and industrial base, and improve onshore domestic manufacturing. The White House is putting over $20 billion toward the effort.

“Allied Universal is honored to serve the Helen Delich Bently Port of Baltimore, and we are pleased to learn of this outstanding ranking by the U.S. Coast Guard,” said Tracey Fuller, president of government services for Allied Universal, in a statement. “We take pride in our ability to provide a range of highly effective, facility-specific security solutions to the port so it can continue to serve the greater Baltimore community as a hub for economic growth, a stronghold for hundreds of thousands of jobs and traveling visitors.”

The assessment – which Allied Universal said included a detailed review of all security protocols and procedures – is for the six state-owned, public marine terminals that are managed by the Maryland Port Administration (MPA). The U.S. Coast Guard Sector Maryland conducts an annual inspection at Maryland’s Port of Baltimore to ensure compliance with federal security regulations.

Security Systems News (SSN) reached out to Allied Universal to inquire whether the standards being set in the E.O. will be a welcome addition to the company’s current services or a challenge going forward. A representative for the company confirmed that, although they provide guarding services, the E.O. would not impact their services to the port.

Of the nation’s more than 300 ports, the Port of Baltimore is ranked first for volume of autos and light trucks, farm and construction machinery, and imported sugar and gypsum. It also includes a cruise passenger terminal.
