Elementary school installs security system in wake of report

KNOXVILLE, Tenn.—An elementary school in this city had a security system installed this week, a day after a local newspaper reported that “Christmas bells,” literally bells on on a rope hanging outside a school office, were the school's de facto security system, according to an article from the News Sentinel, which also published the original report.
On Friday, Mar. 1, the News Sentinel published a story about the lack of a security system at the front entrance of Ritta Elementary School. Perhaps in response to the publicity, Knox County Schools installed a security system in the school, which includes an intercom, camera and monitor, the report said.
Knox County Schools spokeswoman Melissa Ogden would not say why the installation was ordered, who installed it, or how much it cost, according to the article.
“As we have previously stated, we will not discuss school-specific security strategies,” she said in an email cited in the article.
