Faulty fire alarm prompts investigation

HOLLISTON, Mass.—At a restaurant in this suburb west of Boston, a fire alarm was pulled but did not trigger a response from the local fire department, according to an article from The MetroWest Daily News, a newspaper based in Framingham, Mass.
The town administrator said the alarm malfunctioned because it did not register with the company that remotely monitors the fire alarms at the Pinecrest Golf Club, where the restaurant is located, according to the article.
At around 3 p.m. Sunday, a small mulch fire broke out in front of the restaurant. According to the article, a golf course official said someone pulled the alarm, but no response came.
Holliston Fire Chief Michael Cassidy went to the scene after someone called the fire department on a cell phone. By the time the chief arrived, people at the restaurant had already put the fire out using an extinguisher and water from an outdoor spigot, the article said.
The next day the golf course manager, after telling the alarm company he was doing a test, intentionally tripped the alarm. That too prompted no response.
Town Administrator Paul LeBeau said the golf course is remotely monitored because the town's fire alarm loop does not extend to the course, according to the report. Officials were trying to determine the cause of the malfunction.
