How I Use My System: Peter Goldring

Peter Goldring has been the chief operating officer for ADR Security since October 2015, and added on the executive vice president role at the beginning of 2017. “I literally grew up in this space. My family was in the business from 1923,” he said. Security Systems News caught up with Goldring in early November to talk about his home security system and how he has it configured.

What kind of system do you have?

I have a DMP XR150N. … My philosophy is: you have to live with your technology. If you're selling stuff to the public, if you're selling stuff to businesses, you have to have that system.

Why this particular setup?

I have been a DMP customer, in one way or another, for probably a little over 20 years. So, it was the natural choice. I like the system because of its commercial roots and its high security nature, but [also] its ease of use by a real person.

What is one aspect of your security system that you wouldn't want to live without?

The surprise has been how critical the Z-Wave features have been. The ability to adjust thermostats … has resulted in saving hundreds of dollars per year. The ability to lock and unlock doors … has allowed us to have a much easier remodel of a kitchen—which ended up being a very big remodeling project.

Where do you see security going next? What are some big trends?

I think the leap into the automation space … has become a lot more focused—a lot clearer in the last five years. I think we'll see a lot more clarity in the next year or two, even further defining where security companies fit into that space. I think the change from conventional analog phone lines to Internet and cellular communications has taken a huge leap in the last year or two and I think we're going to see continued movement in that part.
