TORONTO—A report from The Star says the city has taken a new, no free chances approach to false fire alarm fines.

ROSEVILLE, Minn.—A story from the Star Tribune reports the Roseville City Council has voted to impose steep fees on citizens who have repeat visits from police for false alarms from automatic security systems.
This year, residents were granted three free alarms, then were charged $100, $135, $170 and $205 for the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh offenses.
In 2011, repeat offenders will be charged $100 on the third alarm, and the fees will increase by $100 each thereafter, up to a cap of $500.

PENNSVILLE TOWNSHIP, N.J.—A story from NJ.com reports that the Pennsville Township committee voted to adopt an ordinance at its meeting on Nov. 15 that will fine all residents and businesses that frequently set off false fire alarms.

MEMPHIS, Tenn.—A Sept. 29 story from The Commercial Appeal reports the Memphis City Council approved a measure Sept. 28 that imposes fines on people whose home or business burglar alarms frequently register false reports. SHAWNEE, Okla.—A Sept. 9 story from the Countywide & Sun reports the Shawnee city commissioners approved a new ordinance regulating false alarms.
The alarm ordinance, proposed by Police Chief Russell Frantz, is designed to encourage alarm owners to keep their equipment in good working condition and imposes fines of up to $100 for false alarms. But no fines will be levied until after three false alarms have been answered and then the first fine will be $25. The $100 goes into effect after that.
