Chuck Young, who has been working at the University of Texas since 2002, first started in security through IT, as he was working with Information Services for the university in 2007 when he was asked to oversee the operation of the school's new Lenel access control system.

“No one knew how to work the system,” explained Young. “I was part of IT projects and architecture at the time, and was asked if I wanted to oversee the system and the security side of things. Here we are almost 10 years later and I am still doing the same job but just for a different department within the university.”

Young started working within the university's Medical Branch Police department last year, where he oversees a staff of two technical electronic engineers as well as a systems administrator. “I act as the senior administrator for everything security related—computer-aided dispatching, mass communication systems, access control—as well as security design on new buildings, including risk assessment and consulting,” he said.

At UTMB, that includes securing 126 buildings in Galveston, plus another 96 acres off Galveston, as well as the recent openings of two new hospitals. “Within the span of four months this year we have opened more than one million square feet of new space,” he noted.

He continued, “We probably have the largest concentration of wireless locking devices in the state with more than 1,000 doors and we are using Assa Abloy. We also have the Galveston National Lab here, the largest Bio Level 4 lab in the U.S. on an academic campus.”

To secure the lab, Young and his staff leverage the latest bio-script technology and video analytics, making it “one of the most secure buildings in the state and the U.S.,” he said.
