News Poll: Tariffs import costs, export uncertainty

YARMOUTH, Maine – Tariffs on imported goods will likely increase costs for customers, but it’s unclear whether this will create long-term disadvantages, say the respondents to a recent SSN News Poll.

Without a doubt, respondents anticipate there will be an increase in costs when it comes to component prices that will impact their businesses. 39.13% of respondents predict a significant increase in associated costs, while 47.83% predict a slight increase. Only 8.7% believe the tariffs will have no impact and the remaining 4.35% believe tariffs will reduce costs.

“Somewhat, but overall, minimally, unless there are some outrageous cost increases (10% or higher),” one respondent wrote.

Other results from the poll:

  • 60.87% of respondents say they will increase prices to customers in response to tariffs

  • 21.74% say they will seek alternative suppliers as a way to soothe sticker shock

  • 13.04% say they have no plans to change their current pricing strategies

  • 4.35% say they expect to absorb the costs

“Thankfully this is not just an industry issue,” wrote another. “Everything has gone up in the past five years across the board.”

Respondents were unable to reach a consensus on how tariffs would ultimately create long-term advantages or disadvantages for the security industry. 26.09% say security will see the advantage of a boost to local manufacturing.

“I believe that this new initiative is very good for America,” one respondent wrote.

Another 26.09% say they believe that there will be significant disadvantages due to rising costs and limited options. A further 26.09% say there will be no significant impact.

“I expect a possible increase in price at first that lowers and settles as the industry settles,” one poll response read. “Suppliers may change but I don't see any large, long lasting negative changes to the industry.”

The remaining 21.74% say they aren’t sure what the future holds.
