Texas city delays alarm permit, citing problems with contractor

CROWLEY, Texas—Businesses and homeowners in Crowley, Texas, have until Nov. 1 to obtain permits for their monitored alarm systems. The city's contractor had technical difficulties and missed the original Oct. 1 deadline.
Crowley's city council approved a contract with the IT firm PMAM Copsource to collect permit registrations and false alarm fines, the Crowley Star reports.
“We don't want to hold people accountable, even though the ordinance says Oct. 1, when (residents) could make the effort to get it done, but we weren't ready to get it going,” Robert Loftin, interim city manager, told the paper.
In 2012, Crowley Police Department responded to 532 alarms, 429 of which were false, according to the Crowley Star. In August, the city approved an ordinance to require a yearly $50 permit for alarm systems and a graduated scale of fines for false alarms.
Loftin said the ordinance remains in effect, but won't be enforced until the city is prepared.
